Chapter 7

Mia

Brett’s venom lingered in the air long after he was gone.

“Brett won’t be the only one,” he said, touching his son’s shoulder, either in solidarity or as a warning. It was obvious that Derek was still on edge and agitated from the encounter. He was breathing heavily—his shoulders and chest rising and falling violently—and his cobalt blue eyes were now a warm amber, evidence that his wolf was clawing to get out and hunt. He didn’t just want to hunt anyone… He wanted Brett’s blood.

I noticed two things in those moments: one, that my parents had done a pretty stellar job at sheltering me my whole life, and two, that Derek was the best kind of mate I could hope for. Even though Derek was disgusted with Brett’s prejudice, he was more on the brink of losing control because someone dared to threaten his mate.

“Hey, how about you take me back to your cave?” I joked, placing my hand on his arm and rubbing up and down.

His eyes fell closed and his breathing began to level back to normal.

“Let’s go home, Derek.”

He nodded, taking my hand in his own.

“Will you be okay, Pop?” Derek asked, searching his father’s face.

“Yes, I am fine. That punk really can’t do much. He is all bark and no bite, just like his old man was.”

“Who was his father?” I asked Kyle, something telling me that the information may be important somehow.

Kyle and Derek looked at each other, obviously trying to communicate something without letting me in on the secret.

“Well, who was he?” I asked again, trying to stare them down and failing miserably.

“Brett’s dad is Gideon McCloud. He is the one who ordered your mother be cast out. He was the former Alpha of the pack,” Kyle said, sadness clouding his silver blue eyes.

“Oh.” I wasn’t really sure what else to say. I felt a weight land on my chest, constricting my breath, making them shallow and obstructed.

Derek quickly pulled out a seat and carefully guided me to it.

“Sit down,” he ordered, and I sat. “You okay, baby? You want some water?” He voice was agitated and a little scattered due to his concern.

I wanted to tell him I was fine, that everything had worked out the way it was supposed to. The reality was that if my mother hadn’t been cast aside like garbage, then she wouldn’t have met my father, and I wouldn’t even be here.

Shock and anger took control, turning the rage into pain. As hard as I tried to hold the tears at bay, I lost the struggle and they came hurling down my face. Derek was beside me in an instant, scooping me up and cradling me in his arms as if I was nothing more than a child. His comfort was allowing me to have strength. My head fell on his strong, broad shoulders, and I just let go of everything and cried, Derek didn’t say a word. He only held me and allowed me to unleash all my pain, anger, and fear, gently caressing my hair.
